![]() ![]() Overall I thought not having the playstore would be a bigger problem than it is. The OS itself is also very easy to use and visually pleasing as well. The positive trade off here is that many apps are optimized for your tablet and are guaranteed to run very smoothly. You can click on “install unknown apps” in your settings and that should solve a lot of your problems. ![]() I wouldn’t root the device unless you are experienced in doing that and to be honest I have yet to need an app that wasn’t in the store but it is something to be aware of. Fortunately there are work arounds and they are not very difficult for most apps. This is a bit annoying as it limits you to many amazing apps. The Kindle OS is android based but does not allow you to use generic android apps that are not in amazon app store. This is one of those hate it or love it things. I have to say I am a fan of the size and feel of the tablet especially at the price point. The quality and feel of the tablet doesn’t blow me away but again we are looking at sub $100 tablets and most feel very similar to this. I thought at first it might be too small but if that’s a concern for you get it out of your head. It is just the right size to comfortably read books or comics, watch movies or play games. If you are looking for a tablet that has a very portable light feel than this is a great option. The form factor on the device is exactly what I needed. I didn’t realize the stress of charging a device so often until I didn’t have to with the Kindle. I own an S7 Edge and have to charge it 3 to 4 times in the time I charge this device once. This is the most impressive aspect of this tablet and makes it a gem. The device goes around 12 hours for me and that’s with actual use… not sitting there doing nothing. I didn’t realize how useful a long battery life was in a tablet until I started carrying this bad boy around. I can’t be certain if the lower resolution screen is a factor in the insane battery life of this device but this thing never dies. This is the weakest part of the tablet sadly but is definitely in the category of functional in almost all scenarios. If I don’t see pixels and the colors look right I am usually pretty happy and it does hit those marks. Overall I am not a freak for screen quality like most others. The screen seem to wash out when hit by a lot of light and has a bit of a glare that creates an even bigger issue. The area this tablet seems to have issues is in daylight. I don’t actually have an issue with the screen indoors, I mostly use this tablet laying in bed or in a coffee shop. The screen itself is not a very high resolution at 1200 x 800. ![]() Well we knew compromise would have to come somewhere at this price point. This new trend to add have a gig to ram is weird to me but seems to have done the job here. In terms of specs (which i said i would avoid) the Quad-core 1.3 GHz processor and 1.5 GB of RAM upgrades over the previous model actually do make a significant difference in performance. ![]() In those areas especially in comparison to other tablets i’ve used in the sub 100 price point the Kindle really shines. It’s great for reading, watching movies, playing games, answering email and using apps. This tablet is not designed to do heavy tasks… it is a media consumption device not media creation device and it’s important to remember that. I run some tough games such as Hearthstone, vainglory and others and have yet to experience any true lag or drop in frame rate. The tablet does surprisingly well for all the tasks one might expect from it. I am not going to go over all the specs since in reality what matters is the following:Īll the responses are going to be based on the price point as a comparison to other tablets in the sub $100 price point. I believe the MSRP on the Kindle is $89.99 and during black friday I got my hands on one for $59.99. As I have stated previously I am a tech junkie and already own a tablet, a laptop and a desktop but the miniature form factor of the kindle compared to the rest allows it a certain level of portability that I was missing. I have been using the tablet for a little while now and I must say for the price it’s a very good buy. Black Friday has come and there is only one thing I snagged for myself during the insanity. ![]()
